This year I'm trying out a simple filter system in the outdoor goldfish tub: A plastic plant container with holes in the side and bottom, filled with zeolite rocks and underneath a water pump that pumps water (200-300 liters/hour) through the rocks and up into a spout. I also added a pond clam ontop of the rocks, since they are great filterers. When the plants grow they'll hide the filter, but it'll still be easy to check how the clam is doing (it should be removed immediately if it dies, otherwise it'll spoil the water). Four big goldfish live in this tub and so far no spring algae bloom!!

  • i have used a very similar set up for 7 yrs now they work well in the smaller ponds

  • I have a setup a lot like that, as a prefilter in our patio pond--have had it set up since October, and it seems to be working well so far. You might also want to try putting some filter wool on top of the rocks, to filter out some of the particles and keep the rocks' pores from clogging up as quickly. The clam would probably do well on top of that.

Gorgeous fish, btw! :) I'm guessing they come indoors over the winter?
