Russia's sat nav system falls short

Russia's First Deputy Prime Minister Sergey Ivanov has told the country's Federal Space Agency that the Glonass (the Global Navigation Satellite System) must work better. Glonass was set up to challenge the dominance of the American GPS system but is still unable to cover the whole of Russia.

The glonass system is not something the russians came up in the 21st century.

The system was active since 1980es, but as far as I know it was never completed in the 1990es. The satelites that were in orbit for decades need to be retired and replaced with new more modern ones.

Btw, repairing satelites is as expensive and replacing them. When they run out of feul (that is necesary to correct orbit) they drift away.

GPS is already used in almost every country for road navigation and is also used in the international commercial flight network.

GLONASS wil end up as useless space junk

CORRECTION: Russia is not behind anybody, it is always one foot behind or ahead. US is ahead because of the 800billion dollars used to get there, time to pay back, no money, you area dead. and no you will not pay it back, nor will china lend more money to you.
