A cell undergoing apoptosis. This cell expresses a green fluorescent version of Lamin A. In this movie we can follow the disassembly of the nuclear lamina during apoptotic cell death
(I used a microscope equiped with DIC optics and fluorescence)

  • what is that green thing inside the cell?

  • The green thing is a protein called LaminA, I have modified it to make it fluorescent. This protein is normally in the cell nucleus and when a cell undergoes apoptosis (programmed cell death), this protein is destroyed and is released from the the cell nucleus
