Working with think tank Demos, v conducted an innovative study into the impact of volunteering on young people's capabilities, which means their ability to improve their lives by developing their skills and characters. Improved capabilities can then help young people to better engage with education and/or get a job.
We gathered evidence from a range of sources, including studying young people who were engaged in our vtalent year programme, and found that long term volunteering can have a positive impact on personal qualities such as confidence and empathy, and outcomes such as feeling positive about the future. We also found evidence to suggest that capabilities are a means to better life changes, improved employability skills and personal well-being.
In this video we chat to Matt and Phillida from Demos about the study, and hear from some of the young people who have been engaged in long term volunteering and their mentors about the positive impacts that it has had.
