A very illuminating version of this most dignified, solemn, and penitential of all Bach's chorales. The melody, usually masked by the other five parts of this virtuoso piece, is picked out by Cochereau in a manner which is startling, but very affecting. Compare with Stefano Faggioni's brilliant, but more conventional, version, and the difference is clear. Both versions are to be treasured.
