First part of my Octaball construction series (4 videos in total).
I made this puzzle in 2009 using one of the Face Turning Octahedrons from Taiwan. This was before they became generally available so I didn't want to sacrifice one. My puzzle was therefore done in a none destructive way and the original Octahedron remains completely undamaged and could in theory be put back together.
The construction process was done by hand without the use of rapid prototyping. Moulds were used though to recreate the Face Turning Octahedron parts so the shaping would be done to these parts and not originals. Since I was casting new parts it was easy to also make my Truncated Face Turning Octahedron (See video).
To make the ball it was necessary to cut it down very close to the mechanism. This means that it works but has some serious quality issues. Sometimes the small triangular pieces sink a little into the puzzle making it tricky to move. These pieces then need to be hooked out again with a small screw driver. For this reason it is unlikely that I will ever make more.
For stickers I used the high quality Skewb style instead of the usual Rubik's Cube type since they look better on small spherical puzzles. As you can see though they are still far from perfect on such a small diameter.
There are four videos to view. Three show the construction and the fourth is a short demonstration of the completed puzzle.
