Can anyone identify the instrument the woman is playing? (Leon Russell in concert, Midland, Texas - June 9, 2007)

  • They call it a beaded gourd.

As for rubbing the hand over it, it makes a rustling sort of sound, hard to describe really.

  • Or, a "russelling" sound?

Heh. Get it? "Russelling"? Leon Russell?

    Um. Well. Never mind.

  • Thanks for the info. What continues to puzzle me is how she occasionally ran her hand over the protuberances that cover the surface of the instrument, rather than hitting or shaking it -- what kind of sound does that produce, if the instrument is primarily a rattle?

  • Jaime Babbitt is correct!

  • The woman is Jaime Babbitt, not leon's daughter. She is an outstanding vocalist! She is no longer touring with Leon and is sorely missed my her Leon Lifer friends.

  • Also, the woman is Sugaree Russell, The Man's daughter. When you rub it, the beads scrape the hollow gourd and making a hollow sound.

  • LOL excellent.

  • It is a SHEKERE. A percussive musical gourd rattle (Beads)instrument that I believe was first introduced into Leon Russell's band by Ambrose Campbell in the 70's/80's.
