A patrol of Dutch coalition soldiers heads out from forward operating base Mirwais in Afghanistan's southern Uruzgan province on an intelligence gathering mission on January 24, 2010. Progress through the barren mountains is slow as engineers sweep the track for roadside bombs, now the biggest killers of coalition troops in Afghanistan. Once they reach an 'overwatch' position above a river valley, a patrol moves on foot into the village, where it is met by contrasting attitudes from the villagers. One elderly man tells them they are not needed there, but at another house the patrol is welcomed and provided with tea before heading back to the overwatch site.
