Backward Stair riding is actually easier and smoother than forward. I did'nt believe this until I tried it myself.

It is important to find stairs with a gentle gradient and start off at the bottom of the stairs and build up you confidence.

I initially started having my feet apart with my dominant foot as the up-hill/ forward leg.

Position your head looking at the direction of your down-hill leg.

Distribute your weight 60% on the uphill foot and 40% on the downhill foot weight mainly on the toes.

Hold onto the railing to begin and at the bottom of the steps push yourself off one or 2 steps to get used to the feeling. It will feel really 'clunky' and not smooth at all but this is really a matter of speed. If you find you are falling backwards then position your weight more forward. If you are falling forwards towards the bottom of the step then keep you weight more to the centre. Use the rail as an initial aid to contro your speed and body position.

Relax your legs to act as shock absorbers.

As you get more confident, go onto a step higher. As you gain more speed you will notoce that you feet will only briefly tap the edge of the step and the ride will get smoother.

Try to 'flow' with the direction of the stair ride and not be too stiff and anxious.
