http://www.endurancesportsinstitute.com Freestyle stroke technique. Keeping your elbow high during the pull/power phase of the stroke increases the surface area used to move water. This generates more distance per stroke and allows for faster swim times.

  • Generally a good explanation and demonstration of the EVF concept but most of the other elements of the stroke in the demonstration are questionable. Beside the rotation, catch, hand and fingers position issues mentioned below, the feet are dragging low in the water, toes are pointing down and the kick is too wide. EVF alone won't compensate for the basics.

  • search for ian thorpe to see great high elbow technique

  • an high elbow is quite important. but you MUST have also a great shoulders rotation. this is the problem with the guy in this video

  • It seems not very efficient swimming for me...Beside the objections about fingers position and pushing the water alongside, the swimmer has got really short stroke. Just notice when he pulls hand out of water, he has still bend his elbow too much and has not finished the stroke properly. He just does not use the full scale of power phase and pulls out the arm too early...

  • swimming flat on his stomach

  • This isnt a nice stroke. The high elbow is very good but you must not push the water alongside the body but under the body. You can see what happens of you dont do that. The body is swinging from one side to the other. Thats not efficient swimming.

  • Nice catch, but tell your pal in the video he is throwing the brakes on at extension with his finger tips pointed up. When swimming at the camera you can easily see his tips rise up and he is showing his palm to the wall in front of him....easy enough to fix, but a serious impediment.
