TRANSCRIPT:
TONY SNOW: Conventional wisdom declares that the last seven years have been a long, sad tale of failure. I maintain the Districts going to call it one of our finest hours. Seven years ago this country was mired in a recession left behind by Bill Clinton. One of many things. George W. Bush had just taken the oath of office. Since then we have endured some of the hardest hits this nation has ever had to absorb. 9/11, wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, corporate scandals, the costliest national disaster in history Hurricane Katrina, not to mention Rita and others that same summer, hundred dollar oil, the sub-prime lending mess. Now, if somebody told you in 2001 how would we be as a country if we had to take each and every one of these blows? You would have said, were toast. And you would have been wrong.

[] The last seven years have demonstrated that leadership counts. The President, against conventional wisdom and with Republican help, cut taxes twice. And here, ladies and gentlemen, is where we got 52 consecutive months of employment growth, a new record that may have ended in the last month. [] Six and half years of continued economic expansion, more people own homes than ever before, more are working than ever before, theyre making more than ever before, their kids are doing better in school, except some of you who are skipping. More Americans attend college than ever before, we still have the largest percentage of our population attending college. The gap between rich and poor has narrowed, not because the government has taken money away but because people are making more money. Crime rate is down across the board, youth crime down, youth drug use down, youth alcohol abuse down, teenage pregnancy down, abortions down. []

Oh, and one other thing, if you are an environmentalist, vote Republican. If people are really green, rather than wanting to take over the economy, theyll realize that free market principles are working. We are improving our air and water faster than anybody on the earth, weve got the best environmental record.
