@abclukeabc you know sayings arnt historical proof, and they are ment to be amusing, so of coarse a conquered people would make them. and in the end, so what? venice was conquered, and they lost, tough luck. unto the victore to impose his will on the vanquished. Venice still prospered, deal with it, hummanity isnt crying for venices fall, only you

@suntbelgae Again: please quote at least one remarkable historian that states what your making up out of nothing (the increased power). We need facts, not opinions. You can find proves of what I affirmed in the essays written by R. Cessi, A. Zorzi, F. Lane, probably the greatest venetian historians so far. There are also a lot of popular saying, mots and memoirs that reports how really the situation was. (of course in venetian language, I fear you can't speak it).

@abclukeabc first: can u give prof? second: the power wasnt "given", but the amount of trade that flushed in by being part of the empire was a huge boost. and as a counter to your argument, would Napoleon, a politician and intellectual just sack such a gold mine? no, he flutuated the capital from his conquests there. and yes, some have become more powerful, such as Hong Kong under britan, South Africa under britan, and countless other ex colonies.

@suntbelgae Nonsense. Venice was at its best between the 13th and the 16th century then the Republic started to decline politically. Please quote at least one remarcable historian that states what you are making up out of nothing. There is no country in the history of humanity that got more power being occupied by a foreign power than being on their own, otherwise why would one invade in the first place? To give power? What a nice fairytale it would be.

@abclukeabc what and you think thats the only crime against humanity that hasnt been payed up in history? seriosly man let it go. Napoleon made it richer, and like all changes in gov there is collateral, that cant be helped. but in the long term, he gave venice more power then it could ever have dreamed, and through his conquest Venice became and even larger mediteranian power. humanity wastn afected, i dont know why you would even think that, itlaians, maybe, but not hummanity
-
@suntbelgae Richer? Not only Venice but the humanity became poorer after venetian political suicide. The amount of artistic masterpieces stolen or destroyed (74 churches with all the paintings and art works) by french army in Venice can not properly be counted. It's a crime against humanity that unfortunatly will stay unpunished. If french govern had to pay for it, Greece in comparison would be Bengodi...

@TheHasanMurat Nope. It was the Austrians.
-
@TheHasanMurat on the contrary, he made it richer
-
Fucking Napoleon ruined it.
omg this country lasted over a millenium! o_o
