Bernadette Peters doing what she does best -- Giving a sincere and believable performance. I absolutely love this -- Most "Rose's Turn"s (*cough Patti and Bette cough*) are WAY too obnoxious and screamy. Bernadette was sick during this performance (it was still even before the run -- just a preview), and you can see that she's not as in character as she was for her sensational Tony's performance. It's really a shame -- Her voice was shot for the previews (which is generally for the critics) and for the cast recording, and because of that, she got pretty weak reviews and the people who bought the BCR thought that she was unable to handle the score. No -- Her viral infection only lasted until a bit into the actual run of the show. People have said that when she was back to normal health, her voice was as powerful as it was twenty years ago in "Sunday in the Park" and "Into the Woods," but with even more emotional depth.
Shortly after this, they changed the dress she wore and ditched the hat.
I absolutely LOVE the way she delivers the monologue before the song, too.

No copyright infringement intended. I didn't record this. For entertainment purposes, only.

Rosalind Russell was a magnificent Rose -- She can actually *act,* unlike many of the self-indulgent histrionic hams (Midler, Merman, and sometimes Lupone) who just over-act everything for the sake of getting a laugh.

Bernadette is a brilliant actress. She was still very sick during this preview, and probably should not have been performing at the time, but she still did.

Mendes is a great director, but his "Gypsy" was a bit sloppy. Still, Bernadette nailed it.

  • @victoriaindigo Mendes has a different take on the musical material he directs. He most definitely has it in his bones. I saw Mendes' "Gypsy"...I was 13, and it was a totally mesmerizing experience.

Oh, and Laurents should validate Peters; it was his idea to cast her in the first place. Early on, LuPone expressed interest in playing Rose in this revival, and Sam Mendes was, apparently, somewhat interested in her, but Laurents forbid it.

I loved both revivals, though. 2003, and 2008.

  • How could you say Rosalind Russell and Bernadette Peters were horrible? Russell is one of the greater actors of our time, and Peter who was superb. Pity you think that way.

  • @DivaBehavior Hey they were all good! THey all had a different version of Rose. BTW This is supposed to be Rose's psychotic break song. The point of the song is to show her slowly deteriorating character and not an elegant song by any means

  • can't believe she lost the Tony to Maria Jarret Winokur! 4:40 and on is FANTASTIC!!

  • @ythc11 i am, for sure!

  • @ythc11 yes

  • @ythc11 i'm definitely interested in seeing the entire performance. bernadette is my favorite Broadway performer.

  • I have this vid if anyone is interested

  • @DivaBehavior I'm just curious- did you actually see Merman as Rose? Unfortunately I didn't, but everyone I've spoken to who actually saw Ms. Merman live said that she was NOT the ham that revisionists have labeled her. There are a few audio clips of Merman live as Rose, and, from what I've heard, I think that her acting was the most real, and the least overacted. Maybe you should check them out.

  • @victoriaindigo But, have you seen anything Mendes has directed (on stage)?

  • It should be noted that Peters, singing sick here, sings the final section a semitone lower than Merman did. That is practically unheard of. Every other "Rose's Turn" I've heard since Merman ended at least a whole step lower. Brava Bernadette!
