The ode Yedid Nefesh (Soul Friend) by Kabbalist Rabbi Elazar Azkari is deeply endeared by Jews around the world. A wide variety of melodies are used for its performance. In the Israeli National Sound Archives I came across an unfamiliar performance of Yedid Nefesh by an unknown youth vocal group named Lahakat HaUzim adapting the ode to a charming melody. In the present performance of Yedid Nefesh, my vocal contribution is attached to the original singing of the youth vocal group.

  • Well, this ode was written by Rabbi Elazar Azkari in Safad, Galilee, during the 16th century, in a particularly exotic, poetic and metaphorical Hebrew, to which a translation into English will make a pale reflection of the original. Yedid Nefesh, that can be translated into Soul Friend or Beloved of the Soul refers to a profound spiritual love for God.

  • It goes like that: "Soul Friend, the compassionate father, draw your servant (or slave) toward your wish. Your servant will run like a deer, will bow before your glory. For your friendship will please him more than honey nectar and every flavour. Glorious graceful is the glow of the world, my soul is sick with love for you. Please God cure it, by showing it your glowing pleasantness. It will then strengthen and be cured, and be an eternal slave for you."

  • There are more verses to that seminal ode, which are not sung in the presented version of the song.
