This video is a compilation of the first two test flights of my Hangar 9 Alpha 40, a nitromethane-powered R/C airplane. My girlfriend was shooting the video as I piloted the aircraft. The flights were conducted at the Warner Park R/C field in Nashville, TN on a busy Saturday afternoon - hence the sound of children in the background. Both flights were successful, though I chopped a blade off the prop on the second landing, which ended up being a bit harsh - I had to steer sharply away from a downhill grass bank that would have resulted in more than a damaged prop.

  • um you are supposed to have 2 rubber bands for each pound the plane weighs holding the wing on. you have four. you should have around 14.

  • @mrfourtysevenman Since that video was taken, I've been flying with 8... the plane weighs around 4 lbs (converted to electric a while ago), and this combination seems to work exceedingly well.

  • @mrfourtysevenman Also, this particular plane is flying under autopilot most of the time, and since I've set the PID gains pretty low, it hardly ever puts any stress on the airframe. Even under strong loops and rolls near full throttle, I've never broken a band yet. :)
