In one of the film's most memorable stunts, Keaton crawls out onto the cow catcher of his locomotive and, lying almost flat, manages to use one of the ties (sleepers) to fling the other from the tracks.

  • This is the Carl Davis score I believe. I think it fits the epic scale and dramatic tone of the film. The film is more than a just a comedy and deserves more than just a comedy score. Its a matter of interpretation I guess. Besides, Carl Davis is one of the best silent film score composers and his work for Thames Silents was instrumental in the resurgance of interest in silent cinema in the 70's and 80's.

  • Thankfully the Kino Blu-ray has 3 different scores.

  • A few years ago my daughter managed to get some tickets to see "The General" on screen with Carl Davis conducting an orchestra playing his own score. Film and music were FANTASTIC, as was Carl's multicoloured jacket.

  • Restorations like this should be done on different other masterpieces of movie art !!!

  • I love this score! This is the one I heard when I first saw this film, my first Keaton film, in a college film course. It was mesmerizing. Totally fell in love with Keaton and this movie in particular. I've been looking for this movie/score combination ever since. THANK YOU. I hope to find this Carl Davis score version.

  • Just look at the stunts 1:40 and especially 1:56... totally incredible!

  • @JPnintendofan - oh, hey! Thanks for letting me know there's an alternate score. I have the blu-ray but haven't even watched it yet b/c I disliked what I'd heard of it here on YT. Now I'll go check it out!

    Have a great day!

  • @EyeLean5280 Okay, I take that back. I just got the Blu-ray and I tried this other score on the disc by Robert Israel and it suits the film better. It's more joyful and makes the film more comedic. This score made things very dramatic, in places where it shouldn't have been. You were right!

  • this is the best score ever, my favorite. I can watch this movie any time, and i did dozens of times. It's masterpiece ...

    thanks for video
