I modified the carb on the 16.5hp briggs on my MTD tractor so it would run richer. These new engines run way too lean even on the richest setting, it runs much nicer now that I made it run richer. Next I have to do some work on the valve cover and valve seats, when it sits with one of the valves open it will smoke alot on startup as you can see.
The classic head gasket problem on the 31 engines.

@suchfunstuff yup, but I didn't want to dump money into this thing because MTDs aren't worth it in my opinion, so I sold it for $300 a few months ago

What mod did you do? EPA was after small engine makers to clean up the air- why they did away with opposed engines as well.
MTD plastic is terrible- i have quite a few plastic grilled tractors with some sort of cracked/broken nose- by PO- one sorta cool fix was a PO used a piece of channel - i painted it black and looks pretty decent - ive used flat metal on the inside and looks tons better.

the carb has a little plastic stopper on the main jet, i managed to cut around enough to get the jet to turn out a few turns. the jet isn't supposed to be removable, and it originally only adjusted half a turn, but if you get the stopper off you can richen it up.
i agree with you on the mtd plastic, it breaks so easily, when i get the time i'll modify the hood mount a bit to make it stay on

ive aways wondered if you could use that spining mesh shroud as a cheese grator

it would probably grate the cheese, but you wouldn't get it back, and you would smell burnt cheese when you mow the lawn
