  • As has been said it was optimum frequency that caused the bridge to do this. When the wind met the same frequency has the materials in the bridge the particals vibrate and the whole bridge wobblse. like when a singer smashes a class same concept.

Military been trying to get these kid of weapons working for years. Think about it they could destroy anything. Make ships fall apart at sea and aircraft in the air.

  • The problem with this bridge is that it has solid (filled in) side panels, which don't allow the wind through. When the wind reaches the right speed, its causes vortex shedding. Which, because of the wind speed, vibrates the bridge at its natural frequency of oscillation (which is where resonance comes into play). Google it.

  • @dantefromsomm nah cus what's happenin there is solid material, concrete, actaully being warped in shape because of what DannyBoi said. If it was a design flaw, it would of moved as rigid as the material it was made out of, unless the road on it was actually made out of rubber or something.

  • um no, the bridge did this because the engineer tried to design a bridge that was some what limber to survive wind and earth quakes but he miscalculated and made it to loose

  • i watch this daily. its my favourite! the physics are just so cool! thumbs up if you agree cmon guys get thumbiin'

  • @DannyBoii its called resonance frequency

  • that's partly correct, but it would be more accurate to describe the collapse as due to 'Aeroelastic flutter', which causes an irreversible positive feedback oscillation. In effect, the bridge was vibrating itself. So had the wind stopped, the structure would have still probably failed.

  • saw that in class it broke :P

  • its possible dey dint fix it strong enough and it was because of strong gails its called tacoma narrows it was in 1940

  • Actually you are wrong this bridge was in Washington State not New York
