You need them to advance the story. IIRC, there is a hidden cave with a ramp in it and you can't see entrance to it without them.

I didn't know about Shift+V and there were no interwebs back then.

Every fight is easy if you press Shift + V.

That's useful against that damn Cavefish that commits suicide and takes along his goggles if you use the chainsaw.
