Well, if you think about it, it's easier to memorize the letter K, instead of FU.

For example, I'd much prefer to memorize

KIB

than

FU FD UL

You can see how the first is easier.

Isn't it easier to call an edge based on the sides it is in? for instance FU for the Front Up edge
