I guess the only thing that changed was the name! The Motown suit could stop them crediting HDH but couldn't stop the sound! Funk Brothers played on many non-Motown records, like Parliaments "I just wanna testify", Jackie Wilson's "Higher & Higher" (Andantes also on this one), The Reflections "Romeo & Juliet", Capitals "Cool Jerk". I wish they had all lived to see the much deserved acclaim they are receiving now.
I knew of HDH starting Invictus/Hot Wax labels and using Edyth Wayne as alias. I'm just surprised at how much it sounds like a Motown record. I know the Funk Brothers are playing on this, but this seriously sounds like it was recorded in Studio A at Hitsville.
Actually it is Motown by way of Holland-Dozier-Holland. They left Motown and started Invictus & Hot Wax records. Produced classics by the Honey Cone, Freda Payne, Chairman of The Board. Because of a dispute with Motown they wrote under the name Wayne/Dunbar.
These words are true today as they were 40 years ago.
