In this short lecture Dr. John Painter shows the use of Hawk Catching a Sparrow palm technique. Hawk catching a sparrow tactic (鷹捉住麻雀) makes use of a rising overturning palm. The rotation of the forearm as it spirals upward stores energy in the muscles responsible for the downward movement through a principle know as the pre-stretch. This allows the arm to move very rapidly downward to catch or deflect an incoming attack. When combined with the body movements this becomes a whole body technique allowing for the production of tremendous force being imparted to the target area. The method is not some esoteric concept; in fact it can be learned by anyone who understands the principles of correct body mechanics, timing and distance.

This video was shot at the 2007 Gathering of The Circle our annual week long training camp.

  • I thought Bagua was "internal" style, aren't all those big movements for begining external training, not application?.

  • @YIQUANONE The term internal or external has been used too often to get people to believe there is some mysterious power or Qi involved in these so called "inner systems" or Nei Jia. This was a demo to show how the Hawk Catch Sparrow method works you might compare the big moves here to first learning to print with big block letters and then graduating to cursive where the moves are much smaller.

  • Dr. Painter, GOOD work, IMPRESSIVE methods. SO, please ignore those comments like TYSON DURR A.K.A BGZBadboy who says he's the only one to know the 64 Palms having studied with Jim Lacy? OMG, Keep the good work coming our way in spite of idiocy, Dr. Painter. You have something important to contribute to Bagua as you are proving on here.

  • @theangelrules007 Dear Friend, I do not have time to take notice of negative comments. I respect what anyone does if it involves skills that work and that can be taught to help others. I have been around too long in Baguazhang 40+ years to worry about what people say. Our art has poven its abilities many times over. Thank You.

  • Hell why throw him away? He is completely open to a punch or "Bearpaw" slap to the back of the head, remember HE attacked YOU, dont be thinking "well I don't want to seriously hurt him" kick his ass and then some if needed.

  • @joshua61991 The point here is to show the action of the specific tactic called Hawk Catching Sparrow many, many other tactics can be used after the beginning of this move so any of your suggestions may work. The point is how to do this technique first then follow up.

    Thanks

    Dr. Painter
