@lbochtler yaes it.s an induction coil, The iron core is a bundle of soft iron wires, works better than an iron rod. Been making this long ago. Very interesting. You can turn just a 1.5 volt battery into a shocker.

@AllAmericanFiveRadio Definitely check out electrotherapymuseum if you haven't. It's a nerd paradise of beautiful antique electric devices and he has photos up or working circuits. I have to say that it's hands down one of the best sites I've ever come across. Too bad the museum is in Florida, but it's on my to do list for one day! Thanks for sharing the video too; as a relatively young man (31 ;) ) I am becoming enthralled with victorian era electrical research and materials.
It looks to me like an induktion coil, probably a portable medical one.
SG transmiters are built up diferently.
