ضياء الدين أبو محمد عبدالله بن أحمد المالقي . لقب بالمالقي لأنه ولد في قرية "بينالمدينا" التي تقع في مدينة مالقة في الأندلس. اشتهر بإبن البيطار مشتق من "ابن البيطري" لأن والده كان طبيباً بيطرياً ماهراً. ولد حوالي سنة 1197م وتوفي في دمشق سنة 1248.

يعتبر ابن البيطار خبيرا في علم النباتات والصيدلة، وأعظم عالم نباتي ظهر في القرون الوسطى، وساهم إسهامات عظيمة في مجالات الصيدلة والطب.."ابن البيطار" خبير في علم النباتات والصيدلة، وكتب موسوعة عن إعداد وتركيب الدواء والغذاء، ذكر "ابن البيطار" 1400 نوع من النباتات في أسبانيا وشمال إفريقيا وسوريا، يمكن استخدامها لأهداف طبية، وذكر أيضا اسم 200 نوع من النباتات التي لم يتعرف إليها طبيب قبله،كما ذكر هذا العالم طريقة تركيب الدواء لبعض الأمراض، والجرعة المطلوب تناولها للعلاج.

Abu Muhammad Abdallah Ibn Ahmad Ibn al-Baitar Dhiya al-Din al-Malaqi (Arabic: ابن البيطار‎) (died 1248) was an Arab scientist, botanist, pharmacist and physician. He is considered one of the greatest scientists of Muslim Spain and is believed to be one of the greatest botanists and pharmacists of the Islamic Golden Age and Muslim Agricultural Revolution.
Born in the Andalusian city of Málaga at the end of the 12th century, he learned botany from the Málagan botanist Abu al-Abbas al-Nabati with whom he started collecting plants in and around Spain. Al-Nabati was responsible for developing an early scientific method, introducing empirical and experimental techniques in the testing, description and identification of numerous materia medica, and separating unverified reports from those supported by actual tests and observations. Such an approach was thus adopted by Ibn al-Baitar.
