Nova Scotia Premier Rodney MacDonald announces funding support for the "Nomination Grand Pré" initiative.
The cultural landscape of Grand Pré, which includes Grand-Pré national historic site of Canada and its surroundings, is a place that has maintained its rural setting and agricultural activities since it was first created by the Acadians when they dyked the marshlands starting in the 1690s. It has inspired countless artists, writers and poets, because of its natural beauty as well as the succession of significant events that shaped Canadas history. This cultural landscape expresses the creative spirit of the people that have shaped and maintained the dykelands in the face of the highest tides in the world, a monument to that continuous effort, and an element of human memory to pass on to future generations. As such, it is on Canadas Tentative List as a candidate to UNESCOs World Heritage List.
The World Heritage List is a list of properties of outstanding natural and cultural importance that are a part of the common heritage of humanity. It is part of the World Heritage Convention, an international agreement signed between countries to protect these properties for future generations.
