On Friday afternoon, at 2:46 p.m. Japan time, the first earthquake struck measuring an 8.9 magnitude. At least a hundred aftershocks have been felt. It is the strongest ever recorded in Japan and triggered devastating tsunamis that sent walls of water washing over coastal cities. Tsunami warnings and high waves reached as far as the West Coast of the United States. The song Sakura, Sakura, is part of the Oyasumi Album by Aiko Shimada and Elizabeth Falconer.
