La traviata, Verdi's best-loved work, is performed here by a star cast in a revival of Richard Eyre's highly acclaimed 1994 production. Music Director Antonio Pappano, now in his seventh Season with The Royal Opera, conducts La traviata for the first time at Covent Garden. American soprano Renée Fleming returns to Covent Garden to sing Violetta for the first time with The Royal Opera. La traviata was first performed at the Teatro La Fenice, Venice in March 1853.

@asdfopera About Zancanaro? He appeared as Germont with Neil Shicoff as Alfredo and to me makes the best fairly recent Germont, but back in the 80's-90's, so too early for the ROH production of AG's debut with Lopardo as Alfredo, a tenor with a decent voice but a bit stolid as a romantic, naive young man from Provence.

@asdfopera Not for all of us. Fleming is highly mannered, but it is interesting to see what she can do with the role at this point. Unfortunately there is no single DVD best cast for one point in time of this production. Hampton pops up a lot as Germont, but does not do much for the part dramatically and is a weak link in several filmings of the opera. Zancanaro is the only baritone I have seen on film who stands out there.

yes, but the soprano is the determining factor, especially in this opera.

the problem is that there is already a dvd of this production with angela gheorghiu. i don't know what they're going to do with renee fleming's traviata.
