  • I love Sandi Toksvig! I'm only 20 but know she's the one for me!!

  • EPIC TOKSVIG FACEPALM!

  • @agfagaevart We are talking about *broadcast* equipment, here. Not consumer equipment.

Digibeta, HDV and D3 tape will degrade slowly, by which time those transfers of 2 or 1 inch material will have been transferred to something else.

  • @AidanLunn

Why keep? Because, some of these new formats have been found to be not-so indestructable later on. For instance, CDs and DVDs really should be 'copied' every 2 - 4 years, as they can degrade with time, and if you scratch them, can become useless. At least if you damage one part of a tape, the rest of it is ususable.

I am not trying to start an argument. Just stating a few facts.

I think that the Beeb (as usually) are being foolish; ALWAYS keep your originals in a safe place.

  • @agfagaevart I know that, but I'm not talking about the past - note no past tense? They are speaking about the present in this above clip, though I would think that they just used the D3 copy and the original tape went on its way to landfill

For example, just last year, when the BBC had finished transferring all their 1" C-type videotape masters of 1980s Doctor Who episodes, they just binned them. Why keep the original VT format, when they've made so many copies of it on so many other formats?

  • @AidanLunn

They were more often 'wiped' as video tape was damn expensive in the past, and live kid's programmes had no value, as far as TV channels were concerned.

  • I remember she was called 'Ethel' in No. 73.

  • I wish they'd left in the yodelling bit :)

  • Sandi looks fatter in this episode! Has she put on weight?

  • I remember that episode of No:73 : )

    Yay for Sandi!
