Editorial October 2009

Ayubowan, welcome to the ninth issue of the online IT magazine diGIT.

September was indeed a very busy month for all of us. The literacy month was celebrated with the annual book fair held at BMICH. It was a special occasion for our diGIT magazine since the public were able to purchase the special edition diGIT CD. A large number of book lovers were thrilled to have their own copy of diGIT. More information on the event can be read in our feature article.

The first symposium on localized systems and applications was held at the University of Moratuwa on the 2nd of September. Over 20 personalities involved in localization gave a brief 10 minutes presentation to the audience. It is a great initiative of LAKapps team and hope they will organize such events in the very near future. Do check the article to read details on the event.

Singapore was host for the biggest games convention in Asia. It was held at Suntec centre between 17th and 20th September. The event had exhibitors from 11 countries including Sri Lanka. It was the first time that a Sri Lankan company participated at a games convention and was an eye opener to the world about the talents that Sri Lankans are able to offer. The event was well organized and attended by a large public and business gathering. Do check the feature article and see which company from Sri Lanka took part in the event.

This months issue also includes an article by Chathra on Intelligent Agents and why agents are important in AI based systems. She goes through the article in an easy to understand form and gives point by point examples on agents which can be used in real life.

Uditha gives us another good article on developing games using XNA, this time focusing on using audio in a game. Feel free to check his article so that you can create your very own game.

Lets focus our attention on a few contributors of digit so that you would be aware of the skillset that is present behind the diGIT team. Do visit the contributor page for details on all our contributors.

Thameera Senanayaka is an undergraduate of the Dept of Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering, Faculty of Engineering at University of Moratuwa. He's had a passion for programming from childhood and has experienced programming in several languages from BASIC to C#. He also likes problem solving, surfing the net, blogging, video games, movies and cartoons. He regularly blogs at his Sinhala blog.

Isuru Perera is an undergraduate student at Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT), Sri Lanka. He is following BSc Honours Software Engineering course offered by University of Westminster, United Kingdom. He is also working as a Trainee Software Engineer.

Let me end this months editorial with an important quotation which in my opinion is something we can all take to heart. It is by Art Turock who once said

There's a difference between interest and commitment. When you're interested in doing something, you do it only when circumstance permit. When you're committed to something, you accept no excuses, only results.

Happy reading!

W.G.T.Fernando
