The first step in obtaining your credit report is to check your local telephone directory under 'Credit Bureaus' or 'Credit Reporting Agencies'. Or ask your bank or a retailer who offers charge accounts.Credit bureaus must share any information they have on file about you.
You may be charged a fee to obtain a copy of your report. However, if you've been denied credit in the last thirty days, there should be no charge. If you are denied credit because of information contained in your credit report, the reasons and the name and address of the credit reporting agency must be provided to you.
Most credit bureaus will mail you a copy of your report, but you may choose to visit their offices in person to review your credit file.
For confidentiality reasons, you cannot obtain a copy of your credit report by telephone. However, a copy can be obtained by a signed written request that includes your name, birth date, social security number, and all addresses you've had in the past two to five years. Some agencies may require additional proof of identity such as the name of your employer or a copy of a current utility bill.
When you receive the report, you should review it carefully. If you don't understand the information in the report, ask questions. The credit bureau staff is required by law to explain the report to you. If you find inaccurate and unverifiable information, it must be deleted from your credit file. If after investigation, the credit report agency determines that the information is accurate, you have a right to dispute that item. You're entitled to provide a brief written explanation that will be made a part of all future credit reports.
