Ken Emerson performs The Hula Blues at George Kahumoku Jr's Slack Key Show Masters Of Hawaiian Music at The Napili Kai Beach Resort on Maui, on February 23, 2011

NOTE from Phil Emerson: during Ken's performance of "Hula Blues"..I had to watch / listen, a number of times, just to absorb all that is going on here..there is a LOT going on! Ken starts out playing Thelonious Monk's song, "Blue Monk" ( with Bix Beiderbecke "Chimes", in there )...then goes right into the 2nd section ( the minor key section ) of "St. Louis Blues"..this was a favorite song of Sol Ho'opi'i..and Sol is Ken's Hero, so OF COURSE he quoted it...then he starts singing / playing "Hula Blues"...combining traditional slack key technique, with Ragtime / blues technique...He ends the song, with the Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue...and slacks that 6th string down down down, and ends on a chord, with that VERY slacked string!.....WHEW, Brah...didn't know you could do all this!...so, this performance, is as follows: "Blue Monk / St. Louis Blues / Hula Blues / Rhapsody in Blue"...Yeah!...I am impressed ( and, man..it is difficult, to impress, your own brother )...Thanks for posting this...I would have never been able to figure this all out, in real time...Aloha, Phil
