Video by Alan Sondheim of Mark Esper's Flying sculpture "Its In the Air".
The large squirrel cage blower creates a powerful stream of air that holds the orb aloft. The orb is stabilized by the Bernoulli effect.
Small wings and vanes help it to fly higher and to spin. As it spins, sensors on the orb are triggered by an external infra-red lamp. This causes twelve blue lamps to fire so that there appears to be a light spinning inside the orb in the opposite direction of the spinning of the orb and at the same speed.
The orb is twenty inches in diameter.
