Race Report - Full Vineman 2008
2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and a 26.2 mile run.
Why do this 140.6 mile race?
#1 To conquer the Ironman distance.
#2 To test the limits of our Will Power and Discipline
#3 To live life to the fullest, because you never know when you may be robbed of the ability to do so.
Here a report on my race:
The swim
My neglected sport since I only swam 7 times in the last three months prior to the race.
The plan: "Focus on form and swim at a pace I could do all day"
The outcome: Better than I thought, as I came out of the water at 1 hr and 21 min. Although I did get stomach cramps with about 100 meters to go. They felt like getting punch on the stomach with every swim stroke. I think under training and going too fast of a pace at towards the end had something to do with this.
The bike
Most of my training was on a bike trainer, even wore a helmet at times to get my neck muscles use to wearing one.
The plan: "Focus on hydration and go at a pace you can do all day".
The outcome: I took a 10 min break at the 57 mile to strech and have lunch. "Nothing new on race day" also means not taking in 1200 calories in the last 3 hrs on the bike, when you are used to taking in 200 calories an hour in training. I was happy with my sub 7 hrs.
The Run
The plan: Protect the legs and just run at a pace you can do all day. At 180 steps per minute, that is 10,800 steps per hour.
The outcome: I was hoping to break the 4 hr and I thought I was taking in enough water, but halfway thru the run I had the urge to pee, but couldn't. I decided to drink only water and more often until this matter changed, but it didn't until after the race. Can you say Rhabdomyolysis. After the race, I felt OK, but I went to the event's medical Station and the doctor said I had this condition. I don't know if I would have continued and finished the race had I seen myself pee a reddish color during the race. The Doc told me to drink a lot of water over the next 3 days, and see my Doctor if symptoms continue after that, but they disappeared within 24 hrs.
Although I did not break the 4 hr mark on the Marathon, I am happy with my sub 13 hr time, and I am glad I slowed down and spent more time on the water stations when I saw the complications by my inability to pee.
Take care.
