the thing that always blows me away about Gobbi was his acting, yes for most of his best roles the voice was amazing, but on stage he his acting ability was second to none.
Purely from an acting standpoint was there ever a more menacing Scarpia?

A superb, complete work of art -- singing, acting, cinematography, yes you read me right, I love the black and white, the closeup held for a long time, making it possible for the viewer to focus on Gobbi's face and his 1,000+ nuances of feelings. Masterpiece of the old days, now all we get is special effects. Thanks for posting!

He was simply one of the greatest "actors" that "happened" to "sing"--"in the moment relating enitrely to the text w/the tragic Shakespearan character--incredible,just about everything including those hand gestures combined w/the facial & the middle voice, makes characterization an understandible one (& Rigoletto is not an admirable character but moves you to understanding him). Tx for posting--as an actress, you can always learn from the greats!

Impossible to take your eyes off him.
If that isn't enough, if you turn the sound off he could arguably be one of the greatest silent film performers of all time.
He could give Lon Chaney a run for his money.
The guy had genius!
