While doing some recent research I discovered that a deeper understanding of the visual system of the horseshoe/king crab has been a valuable scientific resource to computational modeling in terms of neural networking. The visual system of this creature is one of the best understood in terms of small nervous systems. Three leading paragraphs in the Honavar chapter below presents some interesting insights into "the computational sophistication and versatility of a distributed network of neurons...[and demonstrates] that a biological neural system could be understood using computational models." One of my personally favorite insights is the fact that male crabs are sexually attracted to concrete if the mixture is sculpted and painted to look like a female crab.[1] This, of course, resonates curiously, as a primitive form of the Pygmalion myth.[2]

After combining these insights with my pre-existing fascination with the crab theme, i.e.: my Zodiac Sign is Cancer (the crab); I was thrilled by the crab scene in a recent Pirates of the Caribbean movie when Jack Sparrow licks a strange stone that incites an ocean swell of crabs that collectively had the power to move his ship across the desert (or wherever that mysterious land mass was); and then there is always that curious crab/time-travel reference in the "words words words" scene in Hamlet when the crabby prince is verbally-sparring with the politically tedious old Polonius.[3]

Anyway, last week I found an old broken wind-up toy crab (replete with animated, extensible eyes) and decided that it was high-time to engage one of my default roles as "marginal synthesizer curioso" and tie all of these thematic connections together to somehow add a little value and fun to my research. So I made a video clip of Krabbie the Clown to serve as the first "inhabitant" of the proposed MRLIN system:

Enjoy, and of course, feel free to rate and comment on the video,
