recorded 11/24/1916

Lambert began his singing career as a choir boy, in which he sang as an alto. Victor catalogs state that at the urging of Riccardo Martin he was taken in by the Metropolitan Opera. After singing secondary roles for the Met he resigned to focus on concert work.

Lambert recorded exclusively for the Victor Talking Machine Company. He also recorded under the name of Raymond Dixon. Murphy was arguably at his peak as a recording artist from 1915-1920. He continued to record up until the mid 1930's but it dropped off considerably after 1926.

You have outdone yourself with this posting. It is for me PURE RAPTURE and the essence of LOVE!

  • Do you add it to your Victorian list.

  • I just love this song. It has been a favourite of mine for a long time.

I have not encountered this singer before now, but I consider him to be quite exceptional.

  • I did'nt know Lambert Murphy, but this and other recordings show he was a high quality performer. I am glad to have found at last so masterful a rendition of this beautiful song.

  • A lovelier song never was heard! I just found this one, and must add it to the superb disc you sent me. Thanks for a beautiful piece that has been a favorite for many, many years.

  • @kspm01 It's said that "the Great Lover" was totally drunk when he made the recording -- easy to believe if you've heard it !!

  • @merrihew hehe! Along with a gazillion others! a friend of mine calls recordings with this kind of popularity "a national earache" !! Only half in jest, of course.

  • You actually gave the playing speed !! I do believe that's a First on here, in my experience. Congratulations! and thanx... A favorite song with me since childhood...

  • Yes he did but I don't own that one. I bet Roger has it or my friend Sharedrive.

  • This is lovely.

Didn't he record "Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean"? I think it was coupled to Werrenrath's Battle Hymn of the Republic. Great disk.

  • I sure did. I absolutely love it. It is so SEDUCTIVE and ROMANTIC! Thanks again, Dear ONE. :-)
