Welcome to Summer - Zabar's Cheese Plate of the Week

Summer means picnics in the park, road trips, barbeques and great meals that do not require turning on the oven. Cheese is the essential food for all of these things. It is versatile, hearty, and with so many different varieties you are sure to find something to please everyone. Cheese is often thought of as one of the perfect foods because of its high protein content and high amounts of calcium and vitamins. Harder cheeses especially also can withstand temperature changes far better than most other picnic foods such as deli meats, salads and chocolate. There is no reason not to include a great cheese in your next trip to the park or a friends house. To help, we have chosen four cheeses that are as diverse as the events of summer and are so tasty you will not be able to resist.

Fromage dAffinois is one of those cheeses we call a crowd pleaser for a reason. Its mild, creamy, buttery and spreadable on just about anything. What is not to like? Raw Milk Morbier was made out of necessity and made the perfect lunch for the farmers walking high in the Mountains with their herds. Not too strong but flavorful, with that striking line of ash through the middle, its a perfect addition to any meal. Old Amsterdam is one of those cheeses that can weather about anything and still taste like sweet caramel delight. Who needs dessert when you have this? And the Smokey Blue is one of our favorites for a BBQ! The subtle smokiness pairs perfectly with the sweetness of barbeque sauce and makes for a memorable burger.
