This is an extract from 8mm movie footage taken my father around 1948. The extract is from a 1¼-hour original film of Islay, Argyll, Scotland. The full film shows much of the villages of Port Wemyss and Portnahaven and it's people of that time as well as other parts of the island. This third of four extracts highlights scenes of people going about their daily lives -- the postman, the milkman, the farmer lad, men and horses working the fields, the lighthouse boatmen, fishermen and water collection from the local well (there was no plumbing in the houses back then).

  • The boat unloading at Bruichladdich is a class known as a "puffer". I guess the cargo they once carried (coal, building and general supplies etc) comes in articulated trucks on the regular ferry.

  • Milk delivery... by horse. That's fresh! Just having your dairy products delivered to your door reminds me of growing up.

    Thanks for posting this Ian.

  • Thanks again Ian! Some very interesting views, several I guess we will never see again in that form: The cargo ships unloading at Bruichladdich Pier I guess are gone forever. The ferry terminal in Port Ellen is almost unrecognisable (and might be gone completely soon with the upcoming reconstruction of the site) now. Most of the fishing is gone with dwindling fish stocks as well. At least this video will remind us of it.
