Deborah & Loren Haarsma are professors in the Physics & Astronomy Department at Calvin College. Deborah (Ph.D., Massachusetts Institute of Technology) researches galaxies and cosmology; Loren (Ph.D., Harvard University) studies electrical activity of nerve cells. Together, they have explored the science and theology of origins, speaking at numerous conferences, colleges, and churches.

The "Big Bang." Creation. Evolution. Design. Can faith and science get along?

When it comes to the history of the universe, many believe that science and faith are mutually exclusive. But not physics professors Deborah and Loren Haarsma. For them, God is sovereign over every part of life. In their book, Origins, they explore what both God's Word and God's world teach us about creation, evolution, and design.

The Haarsmas clearly explain the science - what is extablished and what is speculative. They take a reformed view, focussing on areas where all Christians agree, while sympathetically presenting the strengths and weaknesses of positions when Christians differ.

Origins offers helpful guidance for Christians who seek to resolve their differences and come to a deeper, more biblical understanding of the origins of the universe.

  • @wolfman49er - I stand corrected. It seems to me that the real definition fits with what people from long ago had as limitations to what they could see and understand, seeing as how they 'thought' that the earth was the center of everything and everything out there looked like it was rotating around earth. Leave it to Kent to misrepresent issues.

  • @cr500blur um. just a small linguistic critique. Universe does not mean 'one word'. The word universe connects two latin words via old french. The words are 'unus' (one )and 'vorsum/ versum' (rotating thing). Notice UNIVERSE is not 'unus' and 'verbum' which would mean 'one word'. Unfortunately that word does not exist. Sources: Wikipedia 'universe', confirmed in Wheelock's Latin college textbook. I think Kent Hovind suggested this one which is etymologically incorrect.

  • @vizion24 hopefully as a fraud not a teacher

  • THERE ARE NATURAL LIMITS TO EVOLUTION: Only evolution within "kinds" is possible in nature (i.e. varieties of dogs, cats, etc.), but not evolution across "kinds" (i.e. from worm to human). Species couldn't survive if their tissues, organs, biological systems were still evolving? I discuss Punctuated Equilibrium theory. Read my article on Pravda: WAR AMONG EVOLUTIONISTS! I discuss almost everything: genetics, mutations, natural selection, fossils, biological similarities between species.

  • This lady is so wrong on so many levels. As a young earth creationist I have to ask, what is she/he thinking?

Go to creation . com for the real story...

  • I wanted to listen to this, but 15 minutes into it, I started hearing things that just make me wonder how people can be so misled. I give you...

"And you forget the LORD your Maker, Who stretched out the heavens And laid the foundations of the earth".

What does this mean? It means He COULD HAVE created everything within a reasonable distance of Earth and then moved them so that the properties of physics would hold true. It DOESN'T mean the universe (One Word) is billions of years old.

  • @Qillz Sounds like a rational and reasonable position to me.

  • Whereas both professors are willing to accept new scientific data and change their minds about science as new evidence is presented, they would apparently never entertain the idea that their fundamental assumption may be false... that a god exists. Since they also maintain that the Bible is the word of God, to reconcile science and religion they posit that the solution is with "interpretation."

Sounds like just more of the intellectually dishonest mental gymnastics of religious dogma to me.

  • This lady is talkin BS 14:10

Thats not a study on a yearly basis, its seasonal change and weather variations.

  • @MasterWok7 Look up Kent Hovind
