First time that I have seen this system, but it would would be perfect for ground effect vehicle's without to much alteration. Germany is testing a prototype at the moment, they run faster and far more efficient than any road vehicle like the buses being used here. G.E.V transport as I call them would put Adelaide in for front as the transport of the future. Most of this type of transport will be using fuel cells or at least hybrid or gas fueled engines. could make other cities Green in envy.
It serves its purpose; feeding buses from the CBD to an outlying suburban sprawl. Something light rail or heavy rail wouldn't do as effectively - in these circumstances. Light ad heavy rail also have their purposes. It's not a case of which mode is best, it's which mode suits the circumstances best.
@GayGuyinTucson the only down side is that it's been running very well for almost 25 years and bus manufacturers have changed how they construct buses. It's been difficult to source articulated replacement buses. But they are coming online now, so it's all good. The maintenance costs of the track are near zero. The only downside I can see is that they currently run on diesel, trolley buses probably wouldn't have the power or speed, and the cost of the overhead lines wouldn't be cheap.
As an inner-Sydney bus driver, I'd give my eye teeth to have a lash at this! On most of our runs, we'd be lucky to clock much more than 40km/hr! Any idea of how much it cost to build? and what the annual maintenance costs are? Great posting, man!
BTW . . . how did you shoot this? I have been trying to figure out how I can do much the same thing on one of my Sydney trips!
@saiyanyugipwns Yeah there has been a few dont know how people end up on there when you have to verge off the road and there is huge signs and flashing lights to let car drivers know its for buses only!!!!
@ LigisdAodSmg. While living in Adelaide i have heard of a few incidents of people driving on O-bahn. The cases i have heard of was on old lady who got lost or something and tried to drive on there but the wheel base of her car was not wide enough and got stuck, also heard of a gettaway car driving on there and getting stuck.
@monotonehell Translink in Canada has about 250 trolley fleets in Vancouver. The cost for the overhead isn't cheap. You said it , Mono.

What's the down-side to a system like this? It looks great.

I think Translink in Vancouver, Canada should get these busways. They're fast & easy to get around.
