This is a Theme I created on my present keyboard back in 2007. As you can tell, I called it - "Nostalgic 80's" as it was mostly inspired by aspects of all three of the official Doctor Who theme arrangements in the 1980s. I performed each instrument track 'as live', so there's been no sequencing of any kind. I only decided to make a video out of it as a spur of the moment decision, as originally, although I liked most of the synth sounds I made/used within the piece, and played to a metronome/tempo track, I do frequently fall out of time. However, re-visiting it recently, I thought I might as well upload it in a video.

Before anyone goes nuts on the whole 'out of time' thing, please understand I am not a trained musician, barely a Grade 1 pianist. Still, I hope people enjoy it never-the-less. If people really like it, I may send it to Whomix.

I used the video, as another excuse to experiment with various title mixes, which you may see in some form again in the new Ultimate Doctor Who titles mix, to be completed in 2011.

For reference, the bassline is inspired by Dominic Glynn, the melody and melody texture inspired by Peter Howell, and minor variations from Delia Derbyshire and Keff McCulloch. Of course, the sound effects (from Sylvester McCoy's titles) were only added for the video.

  • Hello again VTP! So you go to college/uni in Colchester then! May I ask what keyboard or Synthesizer you used to achieve this rendition? Some very well sculpting here I may add :)

  • @therealKINDLE Hi there. Yes, that's right, although its been on my profile the whole time, lol. ;)

Thanks for the compliment. It's not a proper synth in the usual sense. It's a Yamaha PSR 3000. I only bought it brand new in early 2007. It's good for a play around, but the orchestral sounds are mostly quite Midi.

  • This is ace, i really love the 80's titles, they were so colourful and you've made it all come together, well done and i like the version of the theme can i ask where you got it from. Well done on this video nice work.

  • Erm...I didn't get it from anywhere. I made it myself on my own keyboard, apart from the sound effects of course. Stil, thanks anyway.

  • this comment cannot even begin to express my awe.

  • Thank you, you're very kind.

  • @Barneystudioz What you played this on the keyboard. That makes it 10x better for sound like it was made on a music program. I would love if you showed how to play this. As Ive been trying to play this theme for ages. This is one of the best keyboard redos ever on keyboard of doctor who theme as I siad it sound like it inst being played.

  • Very good. More please!

  • Much as I love it, there is a spirit that was always here that Trek (nor anything else) will NEVER emulate.
