Free calligraphy model book download: http://www.9610.com/qinhan/scb.htm
(This is an excellent version of 史晨碑 rubbings collected by a Japanese museum. Over 60 pages of the complete model in HQ resolutions.)

About Chinese calligraphy clerical style http://www.art-virtue.com/styles/li/index.htm
Sample characters (not a phrase) in this video:

石 stone
胙 sacrificial meat (in ancient China) used in a ceremony
竭 used up
律 law; principle

There are several ways of copying Chinese calligraphy models - 臨摹 linmo "Emulation" or 臨帖 (Japanese call it linsho 臨書 ).

Emulation can be done in the following ways:
1. Nearly the same duplicate (the most difficult, but the practitioner learns more.)
2. 背臨 Memorized emulation - practiced after the practitioner has done (1) for a long time and without looking at the model, or just glance at it briefly. (shown in this video)
3. 意臨 After the practitioner has done (1) and (2) for a long time, copying with more freedom without focusing strictly on the appearance but allowing one to use more of his insights and creations. (Here I am adding some characteristics from other Li Shu styles in this video.)

When (2) and (3) are combined, one is ready to create his personal styles.

  • In some Chinese calligraphy styles, sometimes a character is written without a certain stroke or written with an extra stroke compared to the current printed fonts, i.e. Kai Shu.

無 and 胙 are written here differently from the printed fonts.

I cannot make a summary of the exceptions since these are linguistic and artistic issues, i.e. the evolution of Chinese characters and how the calligraphers or common people wrote differently...

  • great writing :)

is that character 無 not missing the upper left stroke in your video?

    石 Stein

胙 Opferfleisch (im alten China) für Zeremonien benutzt

    竭 aufgebraucht

    律 Gesetz, Prinzip

    5 shuriken!
