Know what to do when you steer your car on ice and snow and it just keeps going straight? Check out these winter driving tips at the Bridgestone WInter Driving School in Steamboat Springs, CO, January, 2010. Bridgestone has introduced a new Blizzak winter tire, the WS70, and invited journalists to check them out on the slipperiest conditions you can imagine. Auto journalist Scott Newell reports for AutoNetTV.

  • The people at Bridgestone say the same techniques apply with both but obviously you will have better performance on winter surfaces with winter tires.

  • My S10 has all seasons that are only gonna be good for a couple more months. You know how I compensate for not having winter treads/chains and not wanting to waste gas with 4WD? Drive slower, be more prepared.

Also- go into an empty parking lot, but instead of doing it for fun, pay attention to how your car/truck drifts when it loses control, learn the motions to correct these. It'll help in the real world.

  • @MattHutzell This is good advice. The best way to know how your car will handle is to try it out in a safe area and push it a little bit. Know what the ABS feels like when it kicks in. This will help when you encounter a tricky situation on the roads.

  • no dont pump if you dont have abs. just slow push your brakes till they skid then barely release so they are just ABOUT to skid, that the basics of what abs does

  • @manlymud Not sure the experts at the winter driving school would agree with you on this one.

  • useless vid for those with normal tyres...all the tests seem to be done with winter tyres.

  • @seishin48 the only thing that's going to do is make skids more uncontrollable, and make the car harder to stop.

  • @MattHutzell Hit the nail on the head. The only way you'll find the limit in a car is if you surpass it. Look at the big brains on matt.

  • so pretty much its just like power sliding....

  • im not saying everybody. but i live in northern michigan. where you drive on snow and ice all the time. and alot of people unhook the abs brakes for the winter. some people love them some hate them. i prefer to not have abs in the winter.

  • Thats great they do that. But can they teach you how to deal with other dumbass people on the road that have no clue what they are doing? Cause that is what needs to be taught as well.

  • @manlymud No if you DO NOT have abs brakes you are supposed to pump them. I owned a 79 ford granada and that doesnt have abs brakes. But I pumped brakes when I drove in snow and it works. And I live in northern Illinois. So you know I deal with alot of snow. When it snows that is. haha! Havent really had much this year.
