Rick Podell talks about study and the Beverly Hills Playhouse with Milton Katselas.
Rick says that his time at the Beverly Hills Playhouse as an actor, director, and writer has made him a lot of money. That's because he was table to take what Milton and the Beverly Hills Playhouse were trying to teach him and put it into a practical experience. Rick wrote "Nothing In Common" starring Tom Hanks and Jackie Gleason. In the early 80's Milton talked to him about being more personal in his work, which meant helping him get closer to his art. So he wrote a few scenes and Milton said that maybe there was a movie there. Rick believes that the BHP is a supportive place, where people are behind you on your journey and want you to succeed. It gave him a lot of confidence. So he took the script that he had worked on at the BHP and gave it to his acting agent and the movie went on to gross close to 100 million dollars. Rick says this as a wonderful proof that this place taught him a lot about how to express himself as an artist, but also gave him the ability to make a lot of money. Rick believes that when you study here, there is a history and a timeless journey about the arts. The Beverly Hills Playhouse for him is almost a religious grounds in terms of his art, a place where he comes all the time to get his shovel, go in the sand box to build a castle, knock it down, build another one, laugh, cry and have fun—that to him is the Beverly Hills Playhouse and Milton Katselas.
