This is a Nightingale singing in a very old wood in the heart of the UK. Recorded Monday 3rd May 2007. The quality is not brilliant as it was recorded on a compact camera... but hey... enjoy the moment.
It is the Male that arrives in the UK before the Female, and sings beautifully to demonstrate his occupancy of his patch of potential nesting ground.
The Nightingale is the last bird left singing in the evening after all the other birds have gone to roost. It is an increasingly rare sound nowadays......It always warms the heart when he returns each successive year... I am always pleased when he has made another successful journey back to the UK....Enjoy... :o)

  • Are there only certain times of year when the nightingales are around and singing? Do they keep you awake?

  • @LHeminway Here in the UK we only get them from April to September... It's the Male's that arrive from Europe first and sing their heart's out to impress (attract) a female...So they are not resident. No they don't keep me awake..but I wouldn't mind if they did... They are such beautiful singers... Gerry

  • My bedroom window is adjacent to my Crepe Myrtle tree in the backyard. And every year I am seranaded by an evening-singing bird in the wee-hours of the morning (anywhere from 11:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m.). I love it. I like to think he's singing just to and for me. And it's an unusual song -- never the same note, inflection or tone. So thanks to your video post, I now know it's a Nightingale. :)

  • @Merrytonic That Crepe Myrtle tree sounds nice... Hope you continue to enjoy your Nightingale... Gerry

  • Absolutely heavenly sound. Makes me marvel at creation. How can anyone doubt a CREATOR when they hear such beautiful sounds??

I'd love to know if NIGHTINGALES ARE WHAT I HEAR AT MY WINDOW HERE IN THE CENTRE OF THE CITY. The singing is awesome. It sings up to a very late hour and starts at a very early hour.....what's frustrating is i can't see where it is singing!!!!

  • @HarsensIrelander Very possible It's a Nightingale singing in the city...Gerry

  • Tonight I searched through youtube to find the balming sound of the nighingale, after reading the so called poem from Colerigde. Your recording brought precious memories back to me, from better times in my life. Sitting with a dear friend on a small wall along the river Rhine in my home country, with a full blooming dawn, the blinking of the Planet Venus and the beautiful singing of the nightingale. Thank you for bringing it back.

  • @thePsychoticSatyr I sooo agree with you... :)

  • Glad to hear they don't keep you awake. Going to England in May and my friend (who I will stay with) indicates her town is the "nightingale capital of the world". I've been concerned, I don't sleep well when travelling.

  • @mxyptlk

It does sound like a blackbird or a song thrush song. And they do sing after dark (and before dawn, and even at night) as well :)
