One way of talking isn't better than another just cuz rich people talk that way. I'd agree a standard is useful insofar as someone speaking broad Scots would be very poorly understood, say, in Southwest England, but someone from the Midlands can mostly understand Cockney (or the Anglo-Caribbean infused Cockney that's more common now in London), so why try to stamp out cultural diversity when it's unnecessary?

What amazes me is that a lot of the people who have that accent put it on to impress their friends. What's cool about sounding like a moron? But then I saw a straight A student pretend to be stupid because his friends called him a loser for being intelligent. He failed at school and a year later he tried to rob me. Such a waste.

Of course, in this "facebook" age, it has become, "Why Can't the English Learn to Spell"!! I am so fed up with your not you're, board not bored and there not their/they're. My favourite one recently on FB...a "wined" up clock......! Why can't the English just educate people properly! I'm Russian by the way, it is very sad that I, frankly, speak and spell better English than many "natives". So, indeed, Why Can't the English learn to Speak!

Sondheim makes a good observation about a lyric mistake here- "hung" is used to rhyme with "English tongue" towards the beginning, but a man like Higgins would *never* use the word "hung"- 'hanged' is the proper tense.
