This summer the University of Minnesota Showboat presents "Triumph of Love," which runs through August 28, 2010. The 19th-century play by Pierre Marivaux follows a princess on her quest to return her crown to its rightful owner—the young scholar Agis (pronounced "Ah-zhee"). But Agis has been taught to loathe and distrust women since birth, so the princess disguises herself as a man in the hopes of winning his trust and restoring his crown. Director Peter Rothstein chose musical numbers from the Showboat era—including songs by George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, and Noel Coward—that serve to illuminate the characters in Marivaux's play, written many years earlier. The tunes also help showcase the talent of the Showboat cast members, who rate a rave review from Rothstein.
Really should be referred to by its proper title: THE Triumph of Love, to distinguish it from the Broadway musical.
