The Leprechaun wasn't always the Notre Dame Irish mascot. It used to be a series of Irish Terriers, usually named Clashmore Mike, but in 1965 the leprechaun, who is a Notre Dame student, became the official mascot of the University of Notre Dame, and he has led the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team onto the field at Notre Dame Stadium ever since. This year's leprechaun is senior David Zimmer, and he beat out about 30 others in try-outs that include a strength and agility test, an interview, and leading a pep rally in front of Notre Dame students. Nick Garner of http://www.sportstalk4kids.com spoke with Zimmer at a Notre Dame pep rally, and Zimmer described what it's like to lead the Notre Dame fans during a game, and what led him to becoming one of the icons of college football.
