Cat Stevens version is good, but Stewart makes it better!

I like this version better than Cat Stevens also. This is how they made videos back in the day. MTV cashed in on talent they never had. Nothing original about them except now: MTV SUCKS!

Yes the song needs to sound gritty or coming from a place of pain. Cat couldn't do that.

Too much distortion in this recording. Junk.

I like this version too, most of all in fact, but Cat Stevens did write it, and it has been made a hit by how many other people? It has been made a hit by P. P. Arnold (1967), Keith Hampshire (1973), Rod Stewart (1977) and Sheryl Crow (2003). And then there is Cat's version. It does say something about a songwriter who can write a song that always seems to be a hit no matter who does it. It is a great song that came out of Cat's head. What can one say? He is a genius, whatever people say.

Cat Stevens made a demo recording of "The First Cut Is the Deepest" in 1965. He wrote the song earlier to promote his songs to other artists, but did not record it as his own performance until early October 1967 with guitarist Big Jim Sullivan, and it did not appear until his second album, New Masters, was released in December 1967. He sold the song for £30 to P. P. Arnold and it became a huge hit for her, as well as an international hit, for Keith Hampshire, Rod Stewart, and Sheryl Crow.

Cat Stevens wrote the song and sold it to P.P. Arnold for 30 pounds. His version would end up being released a few months later.
