On May 16, 2011, Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly announced that after 23 years, America's Most Wanted would be cancelled and would not return for the Fall 2011 viewing season. The final episode will air June 18, 2011. Reilly did say that the program to be wound down as two-hour specials that would air every three months though it is unknown when those episodes will start to air. Reilly said the main reason for the show being cancelled is due to the cost of production and not making any money off the show and that ratings played no role in the cancellation. The show still maintained 5 million viewers per episode, which is still impressive numbers for Saturday night programming. In his conversation with reporters, Reilly mentioned that the show's host, John Walsh, was trying to have the series picked up by another Fox property or possibly another network entirely, so it is possible the program could return to air at some point in the future. With it's cancellation, Cops now becomes the longest-running program for the Fox Television Network with The Simpsons moving to second. [6]
Hours after news broke of the show being cancelled, campaigns by fans to save the were being started through Facebook and Twitter.

Then again, it also could be said that all the travel, production meetings, etc., take a toll on the mind... and the body... after such a lengthy time.
Plus, with Ottis Toole being pegged as Adam's killer, plus all the witnesses who can place him as being there at that time, John can finally say, "I don't need to do this so much."
